How to Use Multani Mitti Soap on Your Face and Body Without Drying Your Skin

Most complaints about clay soap – “it dried my skin out”, “my face felt tight” – come down to how it was used, not the soap itself. Clay is absorbent by design. Use it the right way and it gives you clean, matte skin. Use it the wrong way and it will take more oil than your skin can spare.

Here is the routine that works, and the four mistakes worth avoiding.

The basic routine, step by step

  1. Wet your face with lukewarm water. Not hot. Hot water strips the skin barrier before the soap even touches it, and that is where the tight feeling usually starts.
  2. Lather the bar in your hands first, not directly on your face. Rubbing a bar straight onto skin applies far more product than you need and adds unnecessary friction.
  3. Work the lather over your face for about 20 to 30 seconds, using light circles with your fingertips. No scrubbing. The clay is doing the work.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Leftover residue along the jaw and hairline is a common cause of small breakouts.
  5. Pat dry with a clean towel – pat, do not rub.
  6. Moisturise while your skin is still slightly damp, within about a minute. This is the step that decides whether the soap feels balancing or drying.

That last step is not optional. Cleansing removes oil; moisturising replaces the water and lipids your barrier needs. Skip it and you will blame the soap for something the routine caused.

How often should you use it?

  • Oily skin: twice a day, morning and night.
  • Combination skin: once or twice a day. Many people do best washing at night and rinsing with plain water in the morning.
  • Normal skin: once a day, usually at night.
  • Dry or sensitive skin: two or three times a week on the face at most, and always with a moisturiser after. Daily use on the body is still fine.
  • Acne-prone skin: twice a day, but resist the urge to wash more often. Over-washing irritates skin and makes breakouts worse, not better.

Using it on the body

Body skin is tougher than facial skin, so daily use is fine for almost everyone. Clay soap is particularly useful on the back, chest and shoulders – the areas that sweat most and break out most in Indian summers.

The same rule applies: follow with a body lotion, especially on arms and legs. A cocoa butter body lotion works well here because it is rich enough for post-bath skin without feeling greasy in humid weather.

Four mistakes that cause dryness

1. Hot water

The most common one by far. Hot showers feel wonderful and are terrible for your skin barrier. Lukewarm is enough.

2. Washing too often

Three, four, five washes a day does not give you cleaner skin. It gives you an irritated barrier that overproduces oil to compensate – the exact problem you were trying to fix.

3. Scrubbing

Clay exfoliates gently on its own. Adding pressure, a loofah and a face scrub in the same routine is too much for most skin.

4. Not moisturising

Worth saying twice. If you take one thing from this article, take this one.

Where it fits in a full routine

A workable daily routine looks like this:

  • Morning: cleanse with clay soap, moisturise, sunscreen. Sunscreen matters more than any other step for how your skin looks in five years.
  • Night: cleanse with clay soap, then a night cream while skin is still slightly damp.

That is it. Three steps in the morning, two at night. Routines fail because they are too long, not because they are too short.

How to make the bar last

Keep it on a draining soap dish, away from the direct spray of the shower. A bar sitting in standing water will soften and disappear in half the time. If you buy a multi-bar pack, keep the spare bars wrapped and dry until you need them – they actually harden slightly with age, which makes them last longer.

Common questions

Can I use it with a face wash too?

You can, but you rarely need both. Pick one cleanser and use it consistently rather than layering two.

Can I use it before shaving?

Yes. Cleansing first softens the hair and clears surface oil. Use a proper shaving cream over it rather than shaving with the soap lather alone.

My skin felt tight the first week. Should I stop?

Reduce the frequency, switch to lukewarm water and add a moisturiser first. If it still feels tight after two weeks of that, your skin is probably on the drier side and clay is better used on your body than your face.

Can children use it?

For general body washing, yes – it is a mild bar. For young children with very sensitive skin, check with your paediatrician first, as you would with any new product.

Ready to start

If you are beginning from scratch, the Makoy Multani Mitti Soap is the cleansing half of the routine, and a lotion or night cream is the other. The combo packs put both together if you would rather not buy them separately.
